What does reverse engineering means?

3D reverse engineering is a technique or process by witch we accurately model objects based on a set of geometric and dimentional information about these objects. This information can take many forms, from a simple semantic description to 3D laser scans, including sketches and photographs. This technique is particularly useful in restoration projects of civil structures or modernization of complex equipment for which little or no technical data is available.

3D laser scanning is the most commonly used process, and permits a three-dimensional “photography” of objects , also called “scan” . The scan consists of a number of points identified on the surface of the scanned objects . The number of points varies according to the size of objects and the required precision . The scan can then be manipulated in a computer aided design (CAD) software to extract the exact geometric elements for defining a manufacturable object. Today, reverse engineering is used in many fields such as medicine , architechture and construction, manufacturing, etc.
